Nicotine can cause general problems that may affect the hands. These include:
o Reduced blood flow of your fingertips
o Increased circulation problems
o Worsened nerve problems
o Compromised healing of wounds after surgery
Smoking has so many ill effects on the body, I don't have to tell you that, but you probably didn't realize the extent of its harm on your hands. In respect to an orthopedic injury, it is especially bad.
If you are planning to have surgery -- or have had it -- or if you are recovering from a trauma wound, you should stop smoking as soon as possible. It will allow your body to recover more completely and quicker from orthopedic surgery.
