Hand Fractures...and Treatment

The hand is made up of many bones -- 27 in each, in fact -- and more than any other body part. Because of this, the hand is very vulnerable to fractures.
Falls onto an outstretched hand is one of the most common cause of a fractured hand. And, many hand fractures occur while playing sports, especially football, baseball, volleyball, in-line skating or others. Symptoms of a hand fracture include pain, stiffness, and loss of movement.

To relieve pain and restore mobility in the hand after a fracture, treatment is usually required. Treatment may include a cast or splint to protect the hand while the bone in the hand is set and fracture heals. In the worst cases, surgery is required and the bones in the hand need to be held together with pins, plates or screws. Once the fracture has gained enough stability, motion exercises may be added to regain mobility.
