Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Treatment

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful condition of the hand and fingers caused by compression of a major nerve where it passes over the “carpal bones” and through the front of the wrist and alongside tendons of the hand. It is commonly caused by repetitive motions over a long period like typing, parts assembly or the like.

Pain associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is usually felt by sensations of numbness, tingling, weakness, or burning in the hand and/or fingers. The pain is progressive and will not heal on its own if the repetitive motion that created it is still part of your daily routine. Many times, surgery is your only option for relief.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome surgery is typically a minor procedure done under local anesthetic and you can go home after on the same day. An incision is made in the palm of the hand where the “transverse carpal ligament” is cut to relieve the pressure that is causing the pain. After the ligament is cut, the wound is closed with stiches.

Dr. Vourazeris, Ortho El Paso’s orthopaedic surgeon, recommends that patients who undergo Carpal Tunnel Surgery try to avoid heavy use of their hand for about 12 weeks. You should be able to resume your work after that. (Please note that all cases vary. Some patients require more healing, especially if the surgery is done on their dominant hand.)
