I love to walk a 400 meter track. Knowing the distance I need to complete to achieve my goals is great.
But, did you know that if you are walking or running the same distance from any other lane, you are doing more? It's true. Walking your 4 laps to equal one mile can be best achieved from lane 1 but from lane 2-8, you'll get a little more mileage for your effort.
Here's what I am talking about:
Track Distances by Lane
Lane Meters Miles Feet KM
Lane 1 400.0 0.25 1,312 0.40
Lane 2 407.7 0.25 1,337 0.41
Lane 3 415.3 0.26 1,363 0.42
Lane 4 423.0 0.26 1,388 0.42
Lane 5 430.7 0.27 1,413 0.43
Lane 6 438.3 0.27 1,438 0.44
Lane 7 446.0 0.28 1,463 0.45
Lane 8 453.7 0.28 1,488 0.45
We measure our runs in laps around the track--usually a quarter mile track. But, you'll see above if you are running or walking from the fartherest lane out, the longer your distances will be. If you want the most accuracy of measurement, choose lane 1 where 4 laps equals one mile. Or, move over a lane or two or three and get more from your workout.
